Tennessee QB Jake Matthews to retire at season’s end

Jake Matthews, the Tennessee Titans QB, announced Sunday he will retire at the end of the 2017 season, according to the Titans’ official website.

Matthews will become the first quarterback in NFL history to not play in a Super Bowl.

“The time for retirement is now,” Matthews wrote on his Instagram account.

“I’m ready to get on with my life and focus on what I love most, playing football.

I love my wife and kids and all of my family, and I want to thank all my fans for their support and love during my playing days.”

Matthews became the first Titans QB to play in three Super Bowls, passing for 7,738 yards and 35 touchdowns.

The Titans have gone 7-8 this season and are one win away from a bye.

Matthews threw for 4,904 yards, 21 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in 2017.

He will turn 41 on Sunday.

Matthews and his wife, Jennifer, are expecting their first child, who is due in September.

He has played in a total of 18 games, all with the Tennessee Jaguars, during his career.

Matthews is expected to make $10 million in 2018.

He spent his first seven seasons with the Jaguars before being traded to the Tennessee Panthers in 2018, where he has struggled to a 3-11 record in three seasons.

Matthews started his career with the Jets and then was traded to Tennessee in 2018 for a 2018 second-round pick.

He was waived in March and spent the rest of the season on the active roster.

The Tennessee Titans are 2-14 this season.

Matthews was a fifth-round draft pick in 2011 by the Jets.

He started five games as a rookie in 2012, then was released in April after two games.

The Panthers released him in July and he signed with the Houston Texans, where his career took off.

He’s played in nine NFL games, including three starts, during the Titans four-year playoff run.

Matthews has rushed for 738 yards, 22 touchdowns and six interceptions.

He is one of six quarterbacks in NFL playoff history to rush for over 1,000 yards and 10 touchdowns in a single season.
